General Information - Demographics

Italy has a population of almost 60 million people and is a member of the European Union. Italy is affiliated with European Association of Urology (E.A.U.) and has own representatives in both European Board of Urology (E.B.U.) and European School of Urology (E.S.U.).

The main National Urological Association is represented by Italian Society of Urology (S.I.U.) website www.siu.it, which counts 2.500 members and in 2008 celebrated its first 100 years of history being one of the oldest European Urological Associations.

There are 362 urologic departments in Italy. Of these 35 are situated in academic institutions (University hospitals).

Italian residents are united in an Italian Section Office of ESRU (ESRU Italia – webpage www.esruitalia.it) with a total of about 251 residents in 2008. The publication journal of the society is named "Uroneos".

Urological training

  • Urological training in Italy is a five year period (with entrance examination)
  • During the training the resident attends the Urological department of his University, developing surgical, clinical and scientific competence
  • At the end of each year every resident has to do an exam and at the end of the fifth year a thesis, too

Career prospects

  • Work opportunity for an urologist in Italy: academic urologic institutions, urological hospital department (public or private health) or urologic territorial ambulatory
