General Information - Demographics

The Republic of Macedonia has a population of about 2 million inhabitants and is a candidate member of the European Union. At present there are 65 urologists (1 urologist per 31692 inhabitants) and 13 residents (1 resident per approx. 5 urologists).

Mazedonia has 15 urological departments of with one is an academic urological institution (University hospital). The Macedonian Association of Urology has 61 members, a separate association of residents is not set up yet.

Urological training

• After six years of medical school, there is a 12 month period of training as an internship followed by a state exam. Thereafter one can apply for a position as resident in urology. It takes a minimum of five years education to become an urologist. This education includes 14 months in surgery (general, vascular, plastic and pediatric), 2 months in gynecology, 2 months in nephrology, 1 month in transfusiology. Each of these periods are followed by an exam. The urological residency takes 4 years usualy done at the university hospital. It includes all aspects of modern urology (ESWL, endourology, laparoscopic surgery and renal transplantation). At the end of the residency program there is a final oral examination which is followed by a practical (in the operating room) evaluation.
  

Career prospects

• Most of the urologists work in general or university hospitals. Another possibility is a private practice. In order to practice in a university hospital one must obtain a diploma of postgraduate studies in research followed by a thesis of science.
