Urological training

After graduation from a medical institute (6 years of education) one obtains a diploma as a General Physician. Currently, the rules of medical postgraduate education are changing. One needs to do an internship in surgery for one year. Before 2008 it was possible to do the residency for 2 years without internship. Now it's obligatory to start with the internship and to work for 3 years in a urological department afterwards to get experience. These are prerequisites to pass the final exams of residency. After two years of residency one has to pass the State Certification Exam in the field of Urology to receive a certificate as a Russian board certified urologist. The certificate is valid for 5 years. After that period a urologist needs to reconfirm it in attending further training courses and exams. Then a young urologist may continue the education in clinical/academic fellowship in writing a thesis PhD degree in approximately for 3 years.

After finally completing the residency a urologist may work as:

- practical specialist in state/private hospitals

- practical specialist in state/private out-patient clinics
