Switzerland has a population of approximately 7.1 million inhabitants and is a member of the European Board of Urology (EBU). 8 Urological Departments are operating all over the country. There are 170 Urologists (1 urologist per 41,764 inhabitants) and approximately 35 Residents (1 resident per approx. 5 urologists).

Urological training
2 years of training in general surgery followed by 4 years urology. Examinations include a basic surgical MCQ-test. In the final year of training the EBU Examination as a written assessment followed by a practical (in the operating room) and oral examination are obligatory to become an approved urologist. With an additional 2 years the title of operative urologist is achieved allowing to perform all operative urologic procedures.
Career prospects
Career prospects for urologists in Switzerland – although due to rising costs in public health are also getting worse – are still considered good comparing to other specialties. Quality standards can be considered being very high. There are good opportunities to run a private office or to work at a governmental hospital.
